Normandy Memory

Normandy Memory

The project concerns a moving theatre that will guide the visitor through an experience in time and space. Telling the story of the Normandy landings during World War II, the building will move through a stenographic landscape of events revealing the actual scale and importance of the events.

The overall architectural strategy of the project revolves around a reinterpretation of archetypes associated with military architecture, in a desire to evoke the region's past and the theme of Experience. The camouflage patterns of war boats its reinterpreted into new patterns, blending the theatre with the landscape. The industrial nature of military architecture, defined by repeated, prefabricated elements, lends itself particularly well to optimizing construction costs. The separation of the lobby's functions into several entities allows for efficient time management - and thus enables the theatre's schedule to be adhered to, ensuring the target number of performances per day.

The architecture of the entire project develops as variations on metal structures and skins. The use of one material on the entire project will enable us to use similar structural systems, while varying the quality and aesthetics of each of the buildings' skins individually. A lightweight walkway system has been designed to have little visual impact, preserving its landscape qualities of the site and limiting the artificialization of the land.
